Originally by: jonnus ursidae Hi there,
Before I start I've got to say that I'm an Eve virgin and indeed a MMORPG newbie as well, so be gentle with me.
I had a trial account that I played for a few days with a Minmatar character. I completed the first couple of agent missions in the cash for capsuleers story, then stopped playing for a few weeks and after paying up to start a subscription those missions have expired and the agent has got the 'ump with me.
So then I found another agent, level 1 I think and have started a mission about an escaped prisoner or similar, can't really remember as it was late last night and the beers were kicking in. What I'm finding is that this mission is way harder than the cash for capsuleers ones, in the first encounter I had to warp out for repairs and come back to finish the NPC's off. Then once through the deadspace gate I got my arse kicked twice and have had to replace my basic Slasher plus guns, small shield booster etc so lots of buying then flying around to collect.
My question is, are all real level 1 missions this tough for beginners comapred to the starter storyline missions?
I've read about 'tanking' and have tried a shield booster but the NPCs easily trash the shields still. Is this the correct way to approach these missions? Is my Slasher just to crap to cope?
If I die again I'll be out of cash, and will have to do some mining. I believe this is known as 'grinding' and what a grind it is.
Cheers!
Jon
As a new Minmatar combat pilot you want to get into one ship as fast as possible. The Rifter.
In a rifter you will be faster than any ships you see in any lvl 1 agent mission, and most if not all lvl 2 agent missions. Use your speed. Your speed is the only defense you need in lvl 1 missions.
As you are using your speed for defense, you need to open up your range so direct fire weapons from NPC frigates cannot hit you. You can do this if you use small artillery weapons, and long range ammo.
Set your default orbit distance to the optimal range + falloff of your artillery with your long range ammo in it, when you are in space. To see that, right click the loaded weapon when in space and see the attributes tab - there's all kinds of information, including your weapon's current optimal range and falloff. You will miss regularly at that range with newbie skills, but if you stay 25+ km away from lvl 1 agent mission frigates, they generally can't touch you and you can pound them to scrap and never get scratched. Watch out for stasis towers though. They are primary, #1 immediate targets as they completely remove your only defense.
How to orbit. Select enemy, click the orbit option on the actions window that is normally located at the top right of your screen. You can also set your default orbit range with this button.
You should be able to pick up newbie quests that will take you through 10 missions and give you a rifter towards the end, if I remember right.
** edit, as mentioned above, if you orbit into other ships, they will eat your lunch - watch what you are flying towards when orbiting, and don't be afraid to doubleclick in space to change your heading. Herd the enemy into one ball of ships and pick them off like fish in a barrel.
